ABOUT US

Acoustic Architecture was born out of a desire to create highly functional and inspirationally beautiful spaces for performance, creative studios and academic institutions. Following much success in this field, we have branched out to deliver silent and sonically balanced spaces for clients in film, television and private residential spaces.

Real sound is at the heart of our approach, not just ratings and Building Bulletin 93 (BB93). Spaces are modelled and the real sound of a string quartet, drum kit, keynote presenter or even full orchestra is listened to and understood in the context of the desired space. Drawing on decades of experience in live and production music mixing and mastering, this sound is then crafted to bring out every nuance and transient with stunning clarity in the design of the room(s). The sound guides a clear path for choice of materials.

Acoustic Architecture is directed by Alec Boulton and Jeff Smith who, with their breadth of skills, deliver excellent balance of form and function on every project.

Alec Boulton

Alec has carved out a solid reputation in the industry as a recording engineer, producer, composer, writer and specialist music technology teacher. His skills extend to designing, building and servicing studios and performance spaces for his clients; many of whom return for additional work. It was as a maintenance engineer with Peter Gabriel at Real World Studios that his passion was ignited for creating music in highly functional and sonically excellent music spaces. Since completing his BMus Hons in 2002, Alec has gained a trusted name for quality and excellence in both the music and educational industry.

Silent, ergonomic, functional and well-balanced spaces are at the heart of his design of studios, performance venues, music schools and homes. His goal is to listen first, both to the client’s brief and the space itself, and then cut out the noise; not just physical noise, but that of unnecessary equipment, cost and distraction, so the clients' sensitive creative goals can be nurtured, grown and be achieved with success.

Jeff Smith

Jeff is an ARB and RIBA chartered architect. He has gained large amounts of experience working for two well established practices and in 2019 founded his own architectural practice.

He has worked on a variety of projects including residential, educational, leisure and commercial. When offering an architectural service, he believes it needs to be tailored to the individual requirements of each client and project so that a successful design solution can be achieved.

He is keen to deliver a project that is not only acoustically sound but also aesthetically pleasing. This combination allows further creativity to be explored in the design. He successfully delivers this outcome on all of his projects, including several music centres.
